Hollywood photographer David Strick lost a legal battle against the Los Angeles Times this month, when a federal judge ordered arbitration rather than a jury trial over a dispute involving the online usage of his images.
Strick first filed suit against the paper in May, claiming that the Times used 510 of his images on its website -- as well as other sites owned by the Times’ parent site -- after terminating Strick’s contract. Strick, who had a contract with the Times from 2007 until 2010, shot images of the sets of many movies, including "Burlesque," "The Green Hornet," "Everything Must Go" and "Priest."
The Times has rebutted, saying that the movie-set images were loaded onto its server while Strick was still employed, but were not published until after May. Strick’s contract with the Times, however, stated that he was the copyright holder for all images he made while under contract for the paper.
