After two years of denying wrongdoing, Shepard Fairey, the artist who made the iconic "Hope" Obama campaign posters, has plead guilty to a federal criminal charge for destroying documents and falsifying evidence in his lawsuit with the Associated press.

According to the court records, Fairey provided false documents during the litigation and asked one of his employees to mislead investigators.

Originally following the lawsuit, Fairey claimed that fair use laws protected his posters and that he had not infringed upon a 2008 image taken by AP photographer Mannie Garcia.

In 2010, Fairey rebuked his claim, stating that he had been mistaken about which image he had used.

Fairey's sentence is scheduled for July 16. He faces up to six months in prison and fines up to $5,000.

This turned out to be a more unfavorable end to the debacle for Fairey, who seemed to have settled with the AP this past March.
