With the recently released D5100 SLR, Nikon has taken the next step in affordable video recording technology by offering its first model with full HD 1080p recording at 30 frames per second (fps) and full-time autofocus capabilities.
Other focusing options include face priority, which can track up to 35 human faces, subject tracking, and normal or wide-area autofocus.
While Nikon already has several models that shoot in full HD, they offer only 24 fps recording capabilities. The 30 fps resolution in the D5100, however, allows for higher-quality viewing on HDTVs.
This model also offers two extra stops for increased low-light shots with up to ISO 102,400 (in night mode; 25,600 otherwise). Both stills and video can be modified with Nikon's long list of creative filters, including selective color, color sketch, miniature effect and night vision.
The D5100 comes complete with a 3-inch articulated, vari-angle LCD screen, 16.2-megapixel resolution, and full manual controls.
Nikon's new model has an estimated selling price of $799 for the body only or $899 for the body and a AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. A recommended ME-1 microphone accessory can be purchased for $179.
