Sony has unveiled the NEX-VG10, an interchangeable-lens HD camcorder with an extra-large Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor.

Compatible with high-grade, E-mount lenses, the VG10 is optimized for video shooting with silent operation and autofocus. With the use of a mount adapter, it is also compatible with many A-mount lenses from Sony’s DSLR camera line.

Outfitted with an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, the camcorder enables videographers to shoot high-resolution video and 14-megapixel still images. Because it has a sensor that is 19.5 times bigger than standard camcorder sensors, video can be shot with a shallow depth of field.

Other features include auto HDR, handheld twilight mode and anti-motion blur technology. Video can be recorded in full 1,920 x 1,080 high-definition at 30p (29.97p) or in AVCHD 60i (59.94i) format at up to 24MB per second.

The kit comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens optimized for video shooting, with 11x optical zoom. Video can be played back on the 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD swivel display. Dual accessory shoes (alpha hot shoe/universal cold shoe) allow for accessories such as the ECM-CG50 shotgun microphone and external flash.

The NEX-VG10 accepts both memory stick PRO duo and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media. Users can record up to 3 hours and 55 minutes of high-definition footage (1,920 x 1,080 in FH mode) when using the 32GB memory card.

The NEX-VG10 retails for about $2,000.
