Sony has rolled out its smallest high-definition camcorder, the HDR-TG1 Handycam. The camcorder weighs in at 10 ounces and measures 1.3 x 4.7 x 2.5 inches.

The new model incorporates face-detection technology for both video and still images and can identify up to eight faces on its 2.7-inch touch-panel LCD screen. It also automatically adjusts focus, exposure, color control and flash control.

The HD-capable camcorder is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 10x optical zoom lens and 2-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor with Exmor-derived technology. A BIONZ processing engine also features noise-reduction capabilities in addition to fast processing speeds. Audio is recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound and features a built-in zoom microphone.

The HDR-TG1 can record 1,920 x 1,080 HD video and 4-megapixel digital photos directly to Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo or PRO Duo Mark2 media cards.

Cased in a durable titanium body and premium hard coating, it ships with a 4GB PRO Duo Mark2 media card. The HDR-TG1 camcorder retails for approximately $900; an optional travel kit sells for $100.
