For the eighth year in a row, Communications Concepts has honored PhotoMedia with its APEX Grand Award, this time in the Illustration and Design category (For-Profit, Small Office category).
We received the 2010 APEX Grand Award for a full-page photo of a praying mantis by Mark Moffett in our Summer 2009 issue profile, “The Adventures of Doctor Bugs.” That story also received an APEX Award of Excellence in the Interviews and Personal Profiles category.
Altogether, PhotoMedia has received nine APEX Grand Awards and 12 Awards of Excellence over the last 11 years. This was the 22nd annual APEX Awards competition, honoring publishing excellence nationally. Only 100 Grand Award winners were chosen from almost 4,000 entries.

Getty Refocuses Microstock Licensing Plan
To entice frugal web designers to use Gettyimages.com, the Seattle-based stock photo company now offers licenses for very small images not previously offered on Getty, or even microstock sites such as iStockphoto, Fotolia and Shutterstock.
These micro-images, ideal for web and mobile products, come in two sizes: 170 or 280 pixels wide. Getty expects these types of photos to be used for e-mail, websites, web ads, banners, mobile apps and sites, intranets, web applications and other digital projects...
Photography Tour Nets 95 Applicants
The Images for Conservation Fund's Pro-Tour of Nature Photography has received applications from 95 landowners who would like to participate in the event, scheduled for next April in the Texas Hill Country.
The Pro-Tour, which will match nature photographers with private landowners, seeks to foster greater wildlife conservation through the promotion of photo tourism income for private landowners (see PhotoMedia, Summer 2004, p. 34). The landowner applicant pool will be narrowed from 95 applicants to 20 finalists, who will be matched...
Satisfied Customer in California
A couple of weeks ago, I stopped by Samy's Camera in Santa Barbara [Calif.] to check out their new location. After examining a new camera bag, I went over to pick up some product literature when the Spring [2005] edition of PhotoMedia caught my eye. I don't know if it was the large format of the magazine or the eye-catching cover photo, but I pulled one off the rack for a look-see. I had never seen a copy of PhotoMedia before, but this one was going home with me, that was for sure.
I headed over to the checkout counter to pay for it, but pulled up short when I noticed it was free. I went out to my car — my wife was patiently waiting.
Jon Cornforth Wins Grand Prize in Vancouver Film Festival Photo Competition
Seattle-based nature photographer Jon Cornforth won the grand prize in the 2004 Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival's Photography Competition for his image, "Bishop Petroglyph at Sunrise." Another of his entries, "Paradise Wild-flowers," placed second in the Mountain Landscape category.
Cornforth's petroglyph image also was selected for exhibition in PhotoMedia's "World in Focus" contest in 2003, under the Landscape category.
A Time for Honors
On April 20, I had the opportunity to put PhotoMedia's 13 years and my publishing career in perspective when I attended the 50th annual Maggie Awards for publishing excellence in Los Angeles. Last year, PhotoMedia won one of these prestigious statues in the Best Interview or Profile in a Trade Publication category, but I was unable to attend and receive the award in person, as the event's schedule conflicted with production deadlines on our Spring 2000 issue. This year, when we got the word that we had been named a finalist in two categories - including the same category as last year and also Best Overall Design in a Trade Publication...

Call of the Wild
This is an issue I’ve been looking forward to since last summer. While on a nature photography road trip from Seattle to Grand Teton National Park, I stumbled on a photo gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyo. It was a Sunday night, so the gallery was closed, but I was transfixed by the photos displayed inside. I was heading back on the road early the next morning, so would not have a chance to enter the gallery, but I grabbed a courtesy catalog from a dispenser outside the door.
Continuing on my trip, the memory of those photos stayed with me. As I looked over the catalog along the way, I knew we had to share those photos—and this photographer—with our readers. One of the highlights of this issue on nature and wildlife photography has been getting to view more...
