Sony has introduced its new DVD and Mini DV tape Handycam camcorders. The new DVD models allow the user to record directly to disc, play back on DVD players and instantly archive video footage. With a -R/-RW/+RW disc usability, all DVD models are newly compatible with 3-inch +R discs that have 2.66GB dual-layer capacity, nearly double the camcorder's recording time.
The DCR-DVD508 model is the top of the line in the DVD series. It features Sony's 3-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor technology and enhanced imaging processor. The CMOS technology allows the user to shoot video while taking a smaller 4.6-megapixel digital still. The Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization enhances the camcorder's hybrid capabilities, producing blur-free images. Another feature is the slow-motion video mode, which allows playback of video clips at 240 frames per second. It comes with a 40x optical zoom, resulting in a wider image of roughly 36mm.
All the new DVD camcorders come with built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for an at-home cinematic experience. All models are compatible with Sony's ECM-HW1 Bluetooth wireless microphone, which can capture audio up to 100 feet away. A Memory Stick Duo flash memory card slot is incorporated in all DVD models to accommodate photo and video libraries.
The new mini DV models come with Carl Zeiss optics. Also designed with Sony's high-resolution CCD imaging technology, the mini DV models have an extended battery life.
Sony's DCR-DVD508 and 408 models sell for $900 and $700. The DCR-DVD308 and 108 camcorders sell for $500 and $400, respectively. The DCR-HD28 sells for $280; the DCR-HD38 sells for $330; and the DCR-HD48 sells for $400.
