Kevin McGowan and Sharon Holcomb Take Top Awards at 2003 PPW Print Competition
Top awards at the 2003 Pierce County (Wash.) Professional Photographers Association semiannual print competition went to two photographers from Strode-McGowan Studios. Kevin McGowan took Best of Show and Best of Commercial Category for his "Combo Platter," one of a series created for Montezuma Restaurants. His associate, Sharon Holcomb, won in the Best of Restoration category for her "Peek-a-Boo Priest."

John Valls Completes Photo Assignment for Willamette Graystone
John Valls has completed photographs for Willamette Graystone, an Oregon paving manufacturer. The photographs, which illustrate applications for paving blocks, were created in conjunction with the Ulven Design Group, which is designing marketing brochures for Willamette Graystone.
Judy Horn Selected for Fujifilm's National Talent Team
Judy Horn, of Horn Graphics in Tacoma, Wash., has been selected as a representative on the national Talent Team by Fujifilm USA. In addition, Horn recently earned her Associate Fellow Photographer designation with the Seattle Professional Photographers Association.
Allen Haslinger Returns to Photosphere as President
Allen Haslinger, the founder of Photosphere.com, has returned as the company's new president. Marketingbytes Strategic Communications has assumed ownership of Photosphere and its royalty-free image site, www.photosphere.com. Photosphere has offices in Blaine, Wash., and North Vancouver, B.C.
Stephanie Shachat Awarded American Dahlia Society's Gold Medal for Flower Photos
The American Dahlia Society's gold medal for first place in the Artistic Division was awarded to Seattle resident Stephanie Shachat, who submitted images taken at a garden in Seattle's Volunteer Park. Shachat's photographs also took the second place, third place and honorable mention medals in the Novice Division.
Ann McDermott and Sebastian Schoelss Awarded Glazer's Camera Scholarships
Two students in the photography program at the Art Institute of Seattle were recently awarded scholarships of $1,000 each by Glazer's Camera Supply. Ann McDermott has maintained a 3.8 CGPA throughout six quarters of study with the institute. Sebastian Schoelss has maintained a 4.0 throughout his six quarters.
Bruce Forster Shooting for Eyewitness Travel Guide
Bruce Forster (bruceforsterphotography.com) of Portland, Ore., has been on assignment for Dorling Kindersley book publishers, capturing images for their “Eyewitness Travel Guide” about the Pacific Northwest. Logging more than 2,000 miles and shooting more than 100 rolls of film, Forster has traveled throughout Oregon and the Portland metropolitan area photographing landmarks. The book is expected to be published this autumn.
John Valls Launches New Studio

Steven Scardina Exhibits Photos from Western Europe
Portland, Ore., photographer Steve Scardina (scardinaphoto.com) recently presented a series of black-and-white photographs taken in rural villages in central Europe over a six-year period. The exhibition, “Architectural Treasures of Central Europe,” was held at Portland’s Collective, Inc., late last year. A portfolio of the images also appeared in the October/November issue of LensWork.
